MEDIA RELEASE

RELEASE DATE: Immediate

CONTACT: Interim Chief Victor Kemp
SUBJECT: Wilmer Police Department use of Internet social networks.

The Wilmer Police Department has begun networking with all the social savvy of a high school student, but for a very different purpose.

Rather than publicizing Friday night shindigs or sharing vacation photos, the department will use the social networking Web sites Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to distribute information and take in feedback in hopes of preventing crimes through education and communicating with it’s citizens, organizations and businesses. The department also has an email address dedicated to “tips” and assures all information received will remain anonymous.

“In this day in age, a lot of people’s primary source of information is the Internet, not newspapers or magazines, this is a way for us to reach them with what we’re doing and what we need help with, it’s another tool to communicate with our community. With Twitter we are able to post information in the event of a missing child for example within minutes in some situations.”

The department also plans to use the sites to post information about recent crimes, post crime prevention tips, public service announcements and current news releases.

The email address for “crime tips” is wilmerpolice1@yahoo.com. You can follow the department at twitter.com by searching user name wilmerpolice1. Become a friend of the department on MySpace at myspace.com/wilmerpolice1, and Facebook by searching Wilmer PD. These sites are in the beginning stages and will grow with posts, pictures and information over time.

The Wilmer Police Department urges YOU....If you SEE it....SAY it....REPORT suspicious activity to law enforcement!

These sites are not monitored, in the event of an emergency call 9-1-1.
